People often have a negative impression when it comes to the concept of “retirement.” Some may say, “it will be so boring when you do nothing at home;” other may say, “we should be productive to this world and not waste our talents.” I do not disagree with all these statements, but at the same time I also believe that people who have these comments want to avoid the word “retirement” because they do not have that option.
Let’s address the negativity first. When you retire, it does not necessarily mean you need to stay home 24/7 and be a potato couch. What it really means is you no longer need to wake up the same time everyday, go to the same work place everyday, put in the same amount of hours and do the same job everyday, in exchange for a salary. After you are retired, you will have complete freedom to choose the work that you enjoy most, like volunteering, and your decision to pick the job will not need to take pay into consideration anymore. Your job can be so much more meaningful and purposeful.
Also, the same argument applies to whether we will still be productive. With a meaningful and purposeful job, you will have full intent to add value to this world, and when you enjoy what you do, your productivity will naturally increase. Imagine how much effort you will put in, when it is something you want to do!
At DoorInvestor, our motto of retirement is, “You work because you want to, not because you have to.”
The whole notion of FIRE (Financial Independence / Retire Early) is a spin-off of retirement, to help convey the concept to the general public, that it is not a negative thing at all. We want to do this not because we want to stay home and be a loser; in fact it is the exact opposite because we want to recover our precious time so we may spend them with our family, and perhaps contribute values to this world in a different way. It is completely a positive thing to do!
