People may say “I Love My Job” for many reasons. When referring to the term “job,” we are talking about the 9-5, W2, full time job; the one that you are trading your time for your salary, that most of us are engaged to at the moment. There is absolutely nothing wrong when someone says “I Love My Job,” but at the same time it can be interesting if we search a little deeper…
First off, when someone says “I Love My Job” that typically means a combination of:
- I enjoy the type of work I am engaged in
- I enjoy working with the colleagues I am with
- I am happy (or acceptable) with the pay based on the 2 items above
So it begs the question: What if you do not have Item #1 OR Item #2, will you still stay at your work if all you have is Item #1 + #3 or Item #2 + #3? I am pretty sure most of us will say “yes.”
Now, if we carry on and ask: What if you do not have Item #1 AND Item #2, all you have is a happy pay with Item #3, will you still stay at your work? I cannot be very sure, but most of us will probably respond with, “I shall stick around a bit and see.”
Finally, if we ask: What if all you have are Item #1 and #2, and there is NO Item #3, will you still stay at your work? If we work without pay, almost all of us would say, “No way, I will be leaving in a heartbeat!”
What this really tells us is that, we love our jobs for 1 foundational reason – for the salary! If there is no pay, everything else becomes irrelevant. I am trying to convey a message that we are evil to work for money, but rather I want us to realize deep down inside this is what our true intention, and we need to be honest to ourselves and not try to sugar-coat this fact. There is nothing wrong that we work for money, so let’s just face it.
Once you realize the money is the foundational reason for your love of your job, it opens up a whole new world for you; as now for the love of money, you can also put some effort on your other cashflow quadrants, like I for investment, or B for business. For the love of money (and not your job), you no longer need to tie yourself to the E for employee quadrant anymore. It is a mindset opener once you face the truth and embrace it.
